Description

Jack Woods joined the 9th Battalion, The Royal Tank Regiment. He had service from May 1942 to May 1947.

He arrived in-between Juno and Gold Beaches with a column of tanks on each beach on 19 June 1944. He advanced towards Caen and was involved in Operation Epsom.

Jack was to join the crew of 9 Troop Leader’s Churchill tank called ‘Inspire IV’, to help close the Falaise Gap with the 49th and the Canadians. He then crossed five rivers while fighting five battles to reach the river Seine, onto Le Havre, up into Eindhoven, Holland, into Belgium for the Ardennes Offensive in December 1944 to support the 51st Highland Division. Jack was to be involved in fierce fighting in the Reichswald Forest and then crossed the Rhine in early April 1945.

After the war, Jack got a job as a field agent for a fruit and veg firm. He went on to do volunteer work and then opened a large social club. Jack married and had one son.
