I was fortunate to travel to Paris recently to test out my new Sony A7 on assignment. This was my second trip to Paris and with the Sony mirrorless system, my bag was lighter which for city shoots I was very thankful for, actually that was one of many reasons for my switch from Nikon to Sony. I had a few appointments while in Paris, one which I was really looking forward to was the Palais Garner also known as The Paris Opera House. Scott Kelby mentioned this place on tour and I just had to get there and shoot it – it’s like going back in time to the days of the French Renaissance, full of gold and wonder and the place to be seen in during the 80’s – the 1880’s.  It was the set for the 1910 novel ‘Phantom of the Opera’ and now home to the Paris Opera Ballet.

Now if you go to Paris you need to shoot the Eiffel Tower, must be one of the most shot towers in the world! So you need to look for another angle, I like to add another part to the shot and decided on a night time shot under a railway bridge with the tower in the background – I love my new Sigma 12-24, it was built for shots just like this.

My final assignment was to shoot the Cafe Le Consulat near the Sacre-Coeur again at night, although it did take 3 hours to shoot as this place is so busy with tourists, I had to wait for the perfect time just as they were about to shut and with a 30 second long exposure to make sure I had no one in shot – but with the Sony A7, it made it easy and so worthwhile.
